Pyramid of Pace Development - 0.5
Embarking on a journey to get faster requires you to go through different stages of development.
Our framework, the Three Energy Systems of fast bowling, helps us identify the end goal.
We use several tools to guide our athletes towards this destination. One of these tools is the Pyramid of Pace Development, which we created to assist coaches and players.
Identifying where you are in your journey can help you gain clarity and motivation to continue working hard.
Beginner
1: Desire to bowl faster - One must have the desire to bowl faster before trying to improve their speed.
2: Commitment - Most people would like to bowl faster, but not everyone is willing to put in the effort required to achieve it. If you truly desire to increase your speed, commit to doing the necessary work.
Intermediate
1: Freedom - Good luck trying to bowl faster while focusing on keeping your foot behind the line and bowling perfect line and length with skills! You need freedom to express yourself. If the focus is pace, worry about pace. As you advance, introduce skills.
2: Technique - Your body is the only tool you can use to generate speed. Effective technique allows you to exploit every body part (kinetic chain) for maximum power and speed.
3: Athletic Attributes - Bowling fast requires software and hardware to work together. The software is your technique, while your hardware is your athletic attributes. You don’t have a fast car if your Ferrari has no engine under the bonnet!
4: Volume - You can’t just flick a switch and become a fast bowler. It requires significant training to hone and master the art of bowling quickly!
Advanced
1: Consistency - The best fast bowlers don’t just bowl fast for a few overs or on a few occasions. They can ramp it up whenever they need to.
2: Understanding - Different environments and conditions require slight changes to your process. The best understand what they need to do in order to produce speed.
3: Confidence - The best are confident in their ability to perform; they can bowl with speed and skills. Pressure doesn’t force them to compromise on speed to get the job done.
4: Durability - Speed is highly rewarding but highly risky too. The best are durable. Regardless of what happens on the pitch, they bounce back and continue to operate at high intensity.
